Audio PreAmplifier Concepts : Tape Recorder Comparators : PreAmplifier Extender : Audio Distribution Units
Audio PreAmplifier Concepts.
What is an Audio PreAmplifier?.
An old fashioned HiFi PreAmplifier will have multiple inputs and more importantly, should have a set of Tape In and Out Sockets.
Most inputs are 150mV to 1.2V sensitivity at a set impedance around 100kOhms. The specialised Turntable inputs have extra amplification with equalisation known as RIAA (indicated by the green lines).
The standard inputs and outputs are known as 'Line I/O' with fixed mV levels. Of course, the output to a Power Amplifier is controlled by the Volume Control and is 'Variable'.
Via the PreAmp - you select the music source eg: Turntable - and record out to the Tape machine. The PreAmp has a Tape monitor switch so that you can compare the source to what has just been recorded onto the tape without interupting the continued recording (3 Head Machines only).
All Baldwin HiFi modern PreAmps also have this useful feature.

What is a Tape Recorder Comparator? I hear you ask.

An old fashioned HiFi PreAmplifier will have a set of Tape in and Out Sockets.

Via the PreAmp - you select the music source eg: Turntable - and record out to the Tape machine. The PreAmp has a Tape monitor switch so that you can compare the source to what has just been recorded onto the tape (3 Head Machines only).

All Baldwin HiFi modern PreAmps also have this useful feature.

If you have more than one Tape Recorder, 3 Head Cassette Deck or CD Recorder etc then you will need a Comparator to be able to connect all your devices in permanently.

The Front switches on the comparator will enable you to pick a source - and record out to all Tape machines at once.

The graphic shows the interconnects using a Baldwin HiFi PP1707 PreAmp.

The 5 Channel Comparator is shown - 10, 15 and 20 way units are also available.
Comparator Pathways
The TC2309-5 Audio Pathways.
The front panel below shows - from left to right 2 x 35mm VU Meters.
a: 1/4" Stereo Headphone outlet with Volume Control.
b: Toggle switch for meter back lights.
c: 5 Top Toggles to dictate which Tape unit is 'in Charge' (playing the music).
d: 5 Bottom Toggles to listen to each Tape machine (monitor) while recording.
e: Toggle switch to dictate what you are listening to - IE: Source or monitor.
f: On/Off switch and Volume control to adjust the Record Line Output Levels to all machines.
Controls
The TC2309-5 Controls.
Your PreAmplifier has a Tape Source and Tape Monitor Button. If you select this to 'Monitor' then whichever source is selected @ the PreAmp or Via the Top Row switches on the TC2309-5 then this source will be fed to the record Inputs of each Tape Machine and will be heard through the loudspeakers.
TC2309-5 Controls:
With ALL toggles UP - the PreAmp is in charge of the source going to each Tape Input.
If top row toggle 3 is DOWN - Tape Recorder 3 is 'in Charge' of the source.
Both the top and bottom row toggles are wired in cascade mode - so that only one machine is 'in charge'.
With top row toggle DOWN Tape 3 is the musical source. You may use bottom row toggles 1,2 4 and 5 (switch each DOWN) to listen to that machine while it is recording.
Toggle e: lets you switch the audio between the source (UP) or (DOWN) whichever bottom row toggle monitor is DOWN (if none are DOWN then no sound will appear (although the tape machines will still be recording the source)).
In the words of our favourite MeerKat "SIMPLES".

Custom Built PreAmplifier Extender - The Pre-Selector-4309.
If your PreAmplifier is limited to one MM RIAA input, one Auxiliary input etc - yet you have lots of analogue / digital equipment to plug into the HiFi, more than one Tape Recorder, Cassette Deck, Computer Recording facility and/or CD Recorder - then this unit will 'EXTEND' your PreAmps' capabilities.
It boasts 6 sets of Inputs A, 3 Sets of Inputs B and 3 sets of Inputs C (All transparent to the signal source).
It also has capability to record and replay / monitor 5 separate Recording machines all at once (see the TC2309-5 above)!
Let's say you have 2 or 3 MM Turntables - then Inputs B can be used.
You may have more than one MC Turntable - plug these into Inputs C.
All your other Line Level devices can be plugged into inputs A.

This unit relies on your PreAmplifier have a Tape Input and Tape Output set of Connections!

Pre-Selector-4309 PreAmp extender Pathways
The Pre-Selector-4309 PreAmp extender Pathways. The Icons represent the direction of the Audio Path in and out of this Unit.
The Down-Arrow Icons represent signals coming into the Extender - The Up-Arrow Icons reflect signals coming OUT of the unit.
The left hand side of the front panel is dedicated to extending 3 sets (6 + 3 + 3) of individual inputs for your PreAmplifier. The Inputs within the Pre-Selector-4309 are transparent. This means that any signal source may be used back into your PreAmplifier.

The Top Row of 6 x Toggle Switches can be used to extend a single AUX input (150mV to 1.2V sensitivity @ 100kOhm) of the PreAmp.
Imagine you have lots of similarly line level output devices: a CD Player, Tuner, Computer, DAC Unit, etc. Far too many devices to squeeze into the single AUX input of your PreAmp.
Plug all the devices into sockets 1 through 6 on the rear and connect the 6 stack output set to the PreAmps' AUX input.
The switches use a cascade system such that only one source is 'in charge' at any one time.
The bottom row of Toggles is spilt into 2 sets 3. So let's say you have 3 Turntable with mm cartidges (2mV to 20mV) - connect all 3 into the rear sockets and the corresponding Extender output into the MM Phono input of the PreAmp. Similarly, the 2nd set of 3 could be used for MC Cartridges (0.02mV) or indeed a set of something else at line level.

The RH set or 5 + 5 Toggles relate to 5 Tape Recorders or other recording devices
Descriptions of this operation are fully discussed further up this page with the TC2309-5 Comparator.
The furthest right Toggle enables the iPhone 3.5mm input socket into the top row of source 5 x switching cascade so you can record from and/or listen to that too!.

The LH Volume Control allows you to increase/decrease the 2 x Headphone outputs (stereo 750mW into 4 Ohms through to 1k Ohms) to the levels you need (nice sounding internal amps).
The centre Volume Knob to fine adjust the meter sensitivities to the device being used as a source.
The RH Volume Control allows adjustments to the feed output levels to all the inputs of the Tape Machines (for recording).

The Pre-Selector-4309 has some ribbon interconnects which have been screened by internal alloy tubing to ensure that should the user connect low signal level devices through the transparent 6 + 3 + 3 input switching system then minimal inter-reaction in the signal paths will occur.
These pictures also show the PowerSupply which has AC front end filtering with an internal switch allowing 115VAC and 230VAC Mains sources to be employed (this unit will now work perfectly in all countries).

Custom Built High End Audio Distribution Units.
I have made a number of specialist Distribution Units used by a local Cassette Tape and CD duplication Company.
The essence of each design is to de-couple the output drives to each Cassette Machine such that the impedance output is not altered by multiple Cassette Deck Inputs being paralleled together.
Prior to making these units the levels to 50 + Cassette Decks was very poor indeed and got worse further down the original Tascam Cascade chain.
The Company can now be assured that each machine is receiving the original signal without change in quality or levels from the original source using these exclusive Baldwin HiFi products.
